But that thought and discussion won’t happen if the prose is sanitized to remove offensive passages. These are complex questions that deserve thought and discussion about history, culture, and the intent of the author. Of course, we can also ask, “was Heinlein a sexist?” The answer to this is important in interpreting the content of the book and to understanding Heinlein’s contributions to literature. But we can also ask, is Heinlein’s prose a product of the cultural and historical context in which he wrote? There’s a good chance it is and it’s important to think about how the book reflects the time in which he wrote. Did Heinlein use sexist language as a writing strategy intended to critique sexism? Probably not. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.Īs early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations, including a 1991 film starring Ethan Hawke and a 2018 original film for Netflix. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild (1903), which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. Unlike my forthcoming novel, Last Stand of Darwony, Birthright deals with some rather adult themes of evil and betrayal and vengeance. I won't begin to mention all those small bits of information in the film that are never explained unless you happened to have read the book. Readers of the book will be disappointed because the characters feels too shallow and underdeveloped, while general viewers will leave the cinemas with a big question mark. But as it is now, it's like watching the whole story from the book being fast-forwarded, while you get to see a few random scenes in it's entirety. Now, it could have worked perfectly fine as a 2-hour version if the director had chosen to present the story in a different way. It's like the director was trying to fit a 4-hour film into a 2-hour version. ![]() Usually I'm not too interested in caring for the characters, but with a film like this it's all too important. It's too short for its own good, and because of that you never begin to feel anything for what happens to the characters. I wasn't expecting too much, but the problem with this film is that it's basically just a heavily butchered-down version of the book. ![]() ![]() Specifically, I consider whether and to what extent common objections to the exchange of kidneys for cash also apply to the exchange of kidneys for 'kidney vouchers.' Second, I argue that the contrast between the ethical issues raised by these two practices highlights the need to understand commodification as existing on a continuum, with different degrees of commodification giving rise to different ethical issues. I first consider whether the literature on commercial markets in organs – a longstanding topic of bioethical debate – can meaningfully inform ethical analysis of kidney voucher programs. This paper reflects on some of the bioethical issues at stake in this new donation program, as well as some broader philosophical issues related to the meaning and moral salience of commodification.
